How Phil Simms is adjusting to his new broadcast reality
December 1, 2017
New York Post
The football part never was going to be the problem for Phil Simms.
The former Giants quarterback is as obsessed with the sport as he ever was. The routine has changed, instead of focusing on two teams that he would be covering from the booth he now watches every game every week for his role this season on CBS’ pregame show.
It’s not a chore. He spent the Saturday morning after Thanksgiving happily watching the Jaguars’ mundane 19-7 win over the Browns the previous Sunday.
“I am glad I watched it because it gave me another thought about Myles Garrett and another thought about Jacksonville in case either comes up,” Simms said.
“I was never worried [about changing my routine]. I was more worried about how the studio show worked, the workings of it. That’s what concerned me more than anything.”
The switch was sudden and briefly turbulent. It was reported that Tony Romo was retiring from the Cowboys and replacing Simms, who was out of the country at the time. The move was received by the press about as well as Eli Manning being benched by the Giants. It wasn’t that it was happening, but the way it happened.
